“If you want to be happy, be.” ~ Leo Tolstoy
If you want to be happy, you’ve got to be happy right now.
If you buy into the ‘I’ll be happy when…’ then your happiness will always be contingent on arriving at an event. But here’s the problem: that event, that goal, that prize, will never make you happy because the goal will just keep changing. “I’ll be happy when I meet the right person” becomes “I’ll be happy when I get married”…. so you never really arrive at the destination.
Happiness is not somewhere you are going to, happiness exists right now.
In the same way, your happiness cannot be the responsibility of someone else. Your happiness must be your choice. If you place your happiness in the hands of someone else, not only have you placed tremendous pressure on them to fulfill that, but you’ve also told them exactly how NOT to make you happy.
Happiness is a choice.
The most empowering thing you can do is take charge of your own happiness. Own it and make the conscious choice every day to focus on what makes you happy. Use language to reinforce this choice by stating the things that make you happy “I love the sun on my face” or “I love this cup of tea”. By reinforcing these little things you are training your brain to look for and celebrate that which makes you happy.
There is no destination called ‘happiness’. Happiness is not out ‘there’. It’s inside you.
You deserve this. Choose happy.
