According to Wikipedia, Self–esteem is an individual’s subjective evaluation of their own worth. Self–esteem involves a variety of beliefs about yourself, such as the appraisal of your own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors.
Often self-esteem, self-worth and confidence are used interchangeably, however they are not often synonymous.
Moreover, our subjective interpretation of our own self-worth or self-esteem, affects our choices, our assumptions and how we view our place in society. Possessing low self-worth can lead people to become depressed, to fall short of their potential, or to tolerate abusive relationships and situations. Similarly, an over-inflation of self-worth is often associated with entitlement, arrogance and can even be a sign of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Self-esteem is important because it informs our choices and decisions for the future.
Signs of Strong Self-Esteem
There’s a healthy balance between too little and too much self-worth. Here are some signs that an individual has the right dose.

Understanding why we value ourselves the way we do is a complicated process. It’s a systematic uncovering of who you are, what you believe and truly knowing yourself.
Feelings of worth and esteem are often developed in childhood, and not often as part of trauma or abuse. Simple occurrences can shape and mold our understanding of the world and our place in it. Understanding what your beliefs are and challenging these is a foundational first step in moving towards a healthier sense of worth.
