It’s crazy how many people ask me…”So, what does a Life Coach do?”.

That’s kind of a tough answer to give, but I’m gonna give it a go…

We are not Counsellors or Psychologists and therefore don’t provide Therapy, Diagnosis or Treatment for Mental Illness.  Therapy is designed to take you from non-functioning to functioning.

A Coaching relationship is designed to take you from functioning to awesome!

Can the two work together?  Absolutely!

Coaching helps you move from where you are, to where you want to be.  Coaches are your support…your accountability and your sidekick in digging into what is holding you back from achieving your goals.

I’ll use the analogy of physical fitness:  You go to the gym because you want to be more healthy, lose some weight and feel better.  But you hire a personal trainer to help you get to the next level.  They hold you accountable, get specific on what you need to do for your body and help you achieve your individual goals.

It’s the same for Life Coaching:  We are the personal trainers for your mind.

So who has a Life Coach?  I can throw around names like Andre Agassi, Oprah, Justin Bieber, Hugh Jackman and Metallica, but people hire a Life Coach, not because they have to, but because they want to.  They want to build more of an understanding of themselves, change patterns of behaviour and remove obstacles to their next level of success.

What does a Coaching session look like?

So if we go back to the gym analogy, we set a goal, go to the gym, have limited success, stop going, feel guilty, go again….and on and on.  Once we get a trainer, we have accountability..they push us a little harder and we start to achieve results.

Coaches help you manage your mind, in the same way that a trainer helps you manage your body.

Coaches are here to guide you in a conversation.  You show up with a desired topic and outcome for the session, and the Coach leads the conversation and asks questions that are designed to allow you to think about things differently.

My job as your Coach is to challenge your thoughts and support you as you get closer to the problem.  During the session, as you approach a problem of significance, your resistance may increase but my Coaching will continue.  It is this process that will allow you to look more deeply at your thoughts and create a great sense of understanding of who you are and why you behave and think the way you do.

What we do is designed to show you how your thinking is holding you back.

So who do I work with?  My clients are seeking change…wanting change and are ready to step out of their comfort zone.  They are ready.  They are willing.  And they understand that being uncomfortable is part of the coaching process.  That is what will allow you to get to the next level.
